What's wrong with your iPhone camera?
Most iPhone camera problems fall into a handful of patterns. Find the one that matches yours to see what usually causes it and how we put it right.
| What you're seeing | Likely cause | How we fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked or chipped lens glass | A knock to the sapphire lens cover over the camera | We replace the lens cover glass on its own, leaving the camera untouched. |
| Blurry photos, even after cleaning the lens | A scratched or cracked cover, or failing autofocus | We inspect the glass first, then test the focus on each camera. |
| The camera shakes, buzzes or clicks | Damaged image stabilisation after a drop or heavy vibration | The affected camera module is replaced and every lens is retested. |
| A black screen when you open the Camera app | A failed camera, a loose connection or a software fault | We test every lens separately to pinpoint the fault before quoting. |
| Dust or specks behind the lens | Debris getting in through a cracked lens cover | We clean out the camera housing and fit new lens glass. |
| Mist or fog inside the lens | Moisture inside the phone after water exposure | We treat it as water damage first, because moisture spreads to other parts. |
| Flash or torch not working | A faulty flash unit or connection | We diagnose the flash circuit, then repair or replace the part. |
| Front camera faults or Face ID problems | Damage to the front TrueDepth camera | A careful front camera repair, with Face ID tested afterwards. |
Not sure which it is? Tell us what you're seeing, or send us a photo taken with the faulty camera, and our free diagnosis will confirm the cause.
iPhone camera lens replacement or a new camera: what's the difference?
Every rear camera on an iPhone sits behind its own small lens cover, made of sapphire crystal. When a phone lands on its back, it's often this cover that cracks, while the camera underneath carries on working perfectly.
That's good news, because replacing the lens glass is a smaller, quicker and less expensive job than replacing a camera. Your original camera stays in place, so your photos look exactly as they did, and nothing changes in your iPhone's parts history.
If the camera itself has failed, it needs replacing. On the iPhone 12 and later, iOS records camera replacements under Settings, then General, then About, in Parts and Service History. The newest models are stricter still: a replacement camera in an iPhone 18 Pro won't work until the repair is completed through Apple's Repair Assistant, and the same goes for front cameras from the iPhone 14 onwards. We'll explain what's possible for your model, and which part we'll fit, before any work starts.
Before you book an iPhone camera repair, try these five checks
A few camera problems aren't faults at all. These checks take two minutes and will either fix it or tell us exactly where to look.
- Clean the lensWipe each lens with a soft microfibre cloth. Fingerprint grease is a very common cause of hazy, glowing photos.
- Take off the caseA case that has slipped, or a ring or accessory near the lenses, can block a lens or the flash.
- Try every lensSwitch between 0.5x, 1x and the zoom settings, then try the front camera. If only one shows the problem, that tells us which camera has failed.
- Close the app and restartForce-close the Camera app and restart your iPhone. A temporary software glitch can leave the viewfinder black.
- Check Macro ControlIf the view jumps or blurs as you get close to something, your iPhone may be switching to its macro lens. On models with macro mode, you can turn off automatic switching in Settings, then Camera, then Macro Control.
Still not right? That's the point to book a repair, and our diagnosis is free.
Ride a motorbike or moped? Protect your iPhone camera
Apple warns that long exposure to high-amplitude vibration, like the vibration from high-power motorbike engines, can wear down the optical image stabilisation and autofocus in iPhone cameras. Mopeds and scooters can have an effect too.
If you ride for work, including food delivery across Manchester, use a vibration-damping mount and avoid keeping your iPhone mounted for long stretches. When vibration has already taken its toll, the affected camera module needs replacing, and it's a repair we carry out.
Signs of vibration damage
- The picture shakes or wobbles in the viewfinder
- A buzzing or rattling sound from the camera
- Focus that hunts back and forth and never settles
Every iPhone camera, front and back
We repair every camera on every iPhone from the iPhone 8 onwards, from the main camera to the LiDAR Scanner on Pro models.
Main camera
The 1x camera you use most. Faults show up as blur, shaking or a black viewfinder.
Ultra Wide camera
The 0.5x lens, which newer models also use for macro close-ups.
Telephoto camera
The zoom lens on Pro models, which relies on image stabilisation to stay sharp.
Front TrueDepth camera
Your selfie camera. It sits beside the Face ID sensors, so it is repaired with extra care.
LiDAR Scanner
On Pro models, it helps the camera focus in low light and take Night mode portraits.
True Tone flash
The flash and torch, which can fail after a drop or water damage.
iPhone camera replacement for every model
The number of cameras on the back of an iPhone varies a lot from model to model, and it changes both which part has failed and what the repair costs. Here's what's fitted to yours.
| Model | Rear cameras | Also on the back |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max | Three: main, Ultra Wide and telephoto | LiDAR Scanner, and a variable-aperture main camera |
| iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max | Three: main, Ultra Wide and telephoto | LiDAR Scanner |
| iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17e | Two on the iPhone 17, one on the Air and 17e | Flash only |
| iPhone 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max | Three: main, Ultra Wide and telephoto | LiDAR Scanner |
| iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16e | Two, or one on the 16e | Flash only |
| iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max | Three: main, Ultra Wide and telephoto | LiDAR Scanner |
| iPhone 15, 15 Plus | Two: main and Ultra Wide | Flash only |
| iPhone 12 Pro to 14 Pro Max | Three: main, Ultra Wide and telephoto | LiDAR Scanner |
| iPhone 12, 13 and 14, including mini and Plus | Two: main and Ultra Wide | Flash only |
| iPhone 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max | Three: main, Ultra Wide and telephoto | Flash only |
| iPhone 11, X, XS, XS Max, 8 Plus | Two | Flash only |

iPhone camera repair FAQs
How much does iPhone camera repair cost in Manchester?
It depends on the fault and your model. Replacing a cracked lens cover costs far less than replacing a camera, and on Pro models the price depends on which camera has failed. Our diagnosis is free, and you'll get a fixed price before any work starts.
Can you replace just the cracked camera lens glass?
Yes. If only the lens cover is cracked and the camera still works, we replace the glass on its own. It's the quickest and most affordable camera repair, and your original camera stays in place.
Why are my iPhone photos blurry?
Start by cleaning the lens, because grease is a common cause. If photos stay blurry, the lens cover may be scratched or cracked, or the camera's autofocus or stabilisation may have been damaged by a drop or vibration. We can test each camera and tell you which it is.
Why is my iPhone camera shaking or making a noise?
A shaking image or a buzzing sound usually means the camera's optical image stabilisation is damaged. Apple notes that long exposure to strong vibration, such as from motorbike engines, can cause this. The affected camera module needs replacing.
Will my iPhone say the new camera isn't genuine?
On the iPhone 12 and later, camera replacements are listed in Parts and Service History, and a camera iOS can't verify shows as Unknown. On an iPhone 18 Pro, a replacement camera won't work until the repair is completed with Apple's Repair Assistant. Replacing only the lens glass doesn't affect any of this, and we'll explain the options for your model before we start.
Can you fix my front camera without breaking Face ID?
The front camera sits right beside the Face ID sensors, so it's repaired with extra care and Face ID is tested before your iPhone goes back. From the iPhone 14 onwards, a replacement front camera won't work until the repair is completed with Apple's Repair Assistant, so we'll confirm what's possible for your model first.
How long does an iPhone camera repair take?
A lens glass replacement is usually done the same day, and many camera replacements are too when the part is in stock. We'll give you a timescale when we quote, and collection and return are free.
My camera lens is cracked but my photos look fine. Should I still fix it?
It's worth doing soon. A cracked lens cover lets dust and moisture reach the camera, and haze or flare tends to creep into photos as the crack spreads. Replacing the glass now avoids a bigger camera repair later.
