Check your iPhone's battery health in 30 seconds
Your iPhone tracks its own battery wear. Open these three screens, and the reading tells you whether it's time for an iPhone battery replacement. On some iOS versions, the last screen is called Battery Health & Charging.
- Settings
- Battery
- Battery Health
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Capacity of 85 to 100% | Your battery is in good shape. | No need for a new battery yet. |
| Maximum Capacity of 80 to 84% | It's wearing, and you'll start to notice shorter days. | Plan a replacement over the coming months. |
| Below 80%, or a Service message | The battery has significantly degraded, and iOS may manage performance to avoid unexpected shutdowns. | Time for a new battery. |
| "Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery" | A non-genuine battery has been fitted before, so the health reading may not be accurate. | We'll test the battery properly and advise. |
| Cycle Count | How many full charges the battery has been through, shown on the iPhone 15 and later. | Compare it with the design life below. |
| Peak Performance Capability mentions performance management | Your iPhone has had an unexpected shutdown, so iOS is holding back peak performance to prevent another. | A new battery removes the need for it. |
On the iPhone 15 and later, the same screen also shows the date the battery was made and the date it was first used.
How long should an iPhone battery last?
Apple designs iPhone batteries to keep 80% of their original capacity for a set number of full charge cycles. A cycle is 100% of the battery's capacity used up, whether that takes one charge or several.
iPhone 15 and later
Designed to hold 80% of their original capacity after 1,000 full cycles. Charging once a day, that's getting on for three years.
iPhone 14 and earlier
Designed to hold 80% after 500 full cycles, which daily charging uses up in well under two years. That's why so many older iPhones need a new battery.
iPhone battery replacement for every model
We replace batteries on every iPhone from the iPhone 8 onwards. Newer models are built to last twice as many charge cycles, and they show you more about the battery in Settings.
| Model | Keeps 80% capacity for | Cycle count in Settings? |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 17 series | 1,000 cycles | Yes, with manufacture and first-use dates |
| iPhone 16 series, including iPhone 16e | 1,000 cycles | Yes, with manufacture and first-use dates |
| iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max | 1,000 cycles | Yes, with manufacture and first-use dates |
| iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max | 500 cycles | No, Maximum Capacity only |
| iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max | 500 cycles | No, Maximum Capacity only |
| iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max | 500 cycles | No, Maximum Capacity only |
| iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max | 500 cycles | No, Maximum Capacity only |
| iPhone X, XS, XS Max, XR, 8, 8 Plus, SE (2nd and 3rd gen) | 500 cycles | No, Maximum Capacity only |
Cycle counts appear in Settings on the iPhone 15 and later with iOS 17.4 or newer. On older models, Maximum Capacity is the figure to watch.
Six signs your iPhone needs a new battery
It switches off early
Shutting down at 20% or 30%, especially in the cold, is a classic sign a battery can no longer deliver peak power.
It won't last the day
If you're reaching for a charger by lunchtime on a phone that used to last until bedtime, its capacity has dropped.
It feels slower
When a worn battery struggles, iOS can manage performance to prevent shutdowns, so apps open and scroll more slowly.
It gets hot during normal use
Some warmth while charging is normal, but a battery that runs hot during everyday use needs checking.
Battery Health says Service
iOS shows Service when it decides the battery has significantly degraded and should be replaced.
The screen or back is bulging
A swollen battery can push the screen out of the frame or lift the back glass. Stop charging it straight away.
Fast drain isn't always the battery
If Maximum Capacity still looks healthy, the drain may have another cause. These four are the usual suspects.
- A recent iOS update
- For a day or two after an update, your iPhone finishes background tasks that use extra power.
- A weak signal
- In a poor-coverage spot, your iPhone works harder to stay connected, which drains the battery faster.
- One app using too much
- Settings, then Battery, shows which apps have used the most power over the last day or ten days.
- Very high screen brightness
- The display is one of the biggest power users, so brightness and screen-on time make a real difference.
Still draining with a healthy reading? Our diagnosis is free, and we'll only recommend a new battery if the battery is really the problem.
Swollen iPhone battery? Stop charging it
A swollen lithium-ion battery can push the screen away from the frame or lift the back glass. Don't press it back into place, don't keep charging it, and keep it away from heat. We'll collect it from you, remove the battery safely and fit a new one, then check the screen and frame for any damage the swelling caused.
What happens during an iPhone battery replacement
iPhone batteries are fixed firmly in place, and depending on the model, they're reached by opening either the screen or the back glass. The old battery comes out carefully without bending it, the new one goes in, and the phone is sealed again with fresh adhesive.
We're open about parts. With a non-genuine battery, iOS shows that it can't verify a genuine Apple battery, and the health reading may not be accurate. On the iPhone 15 and later with iOS 18, a genuine battery previously used in another iPhone shows as Used. Before we start, we'll tell you exactly which battery we're fitting. Other phone? Make your new iPhone battery last longer
- Use the charge limit
- On the iPhone 15 and later, you can stop charging at 80% or another level under Settings, then Battery, then Charging.
- Leave Optimised Battery Charging on
- On other models, it learns your routine and holds the battery at 80% overnight until you're about to need it.
- Keep it out of the heat
- Apple advises avoiding ambient temperatures above 35°C, so don't leave your iPhone on a sunny dashboard or charge it under a pillow.
- Expect shorter days in winter
- Cold weather temporarily reduces battery life, so a phone that dies early on a frosty Manchester morning may simply need warming up.
- Take the case off if it gets hot
- Some cases trap heat while charging. If your iPhone feels hot, charge it without the case.

iPhone battery replacement FAQs
How much does an iPhone battery replacement cost in Manchester?
Battery replacements start from £25. The exact price depends on your model and is confirmed before any work starts, with free collection and our 24-month warranty included.
How long does an iPhone battery replacement take?
Most iPhone battery replacements are done the same day, and the fitting itself usually takes under an hour once the right battery is here. Many can be carried out at your home or workplace.
When should I replace my iPhone battery?
When Maximum Capacity drops below 80%, when Battery Health shows a Service message, or when your iPhone shuts down unexpectedly or can't get through a normal day. You can check under Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health.
Will a new battery make my iPhone faster?
If iOS has been managing performance because the old battery couldn't deliver enough power, yes: a new battery lets the phone run at full speed again. If your iPhone is slow for other reasons, such as full storage, a battery won't change that, and we'll tell you honestly.
Will my iPhone say the new battery isn't genuine?
It depends on the battery. With a non-genuine battery, iOS says it's unable to verify a genuine Apple battery, and the health percentage may not be accurate. The battery still works normally, and we'll always tell you which battery we're fitting.
Will I lose any data?
No. A battery replacement doesn't touch your photos, messages or apps, and your iPhone won't need resetting. A backup beforehand is still sensible.
Is it worth replacing the battery on an older iPhone?
Usually. A new battery costs a fraction of a new phone, and older iPhones designed for 500 cycles are often due one by their second or third year. If other parts are failing too, we'll tell you before you spend anything.
Can you replace a swollen iPhone battery?
Yes. Stop charging it, don't press on the screen or back, and get in touch. We'll collect it, remove the swollen battery safely, fit a new one and check for any damage the swelling caused.
