Should you fix cracked iPhone back glass?
Plenty of people live with a cracked back for months. It usually keeps working, but the damage tends to cost more the longer it's left.
- Sharp edges
- Loose splinters can cut your fingers and snag pockets, and they come away a little more each time you pick the phone up.
- Dust and moisture
- Cracks break the seal that helps keep water and dirt out of your iPhone.
- Wireless charging problems
- The wireless charging coil sits right behind the glass, so damage there can affect MagSafe and wireless charging.
- Cracks that spread
- Temperature changes and small knocks let cracks creep further across the glass.
- Lower trade-in value
- A cracked back noticeably reduces what your iPhone is worth when you sell it or trade it in.
Why do iPhones have a glass back at all?
Apple moved to glass backs with the iPhone 8 in 2017, because wireless charging needs a back that the charging field can pass through, and metal would block it. The glass is toughened, but a drop onto a hard edge can still crack it, and once one crack starts, others tend to follow.
It's also why the iPhone 17 Pro, with its aluminium body, still has a glass panel on the back: that's where the charging coil sits.
Two kinds of iPhone back, two kinds of back glass replacement
Apple has changed how the back of the iPhone is built. On newer models, the glass is a separate panel. On older ones, it's bonded to the frame, which makes the job slower and more delicate.
| Model | Back glass | What the repair involves |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 15, 16, 17 and 18 series | Separate, removable panel | The cracked panel comes away in one piece, so the swap is quicker and costs less. |
| iPhone 14, 14 Plus | Separate, removable panel | The first iPhones since the iPhone 4S designed to open from the back. |
| iPhone 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max | Bonded to the frame | The broken glass has to be separated from the frame before new glass goes on. |
| iPhone 8 to iPhone 13, and iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd gen) | Bonded to the frame | Slower, more delicate work, which is reflected in the price. |
On older models, Apple doesn't replace the glass on its own: for the iPhone 12 and 13 it fits a whole new rear enclosure, and for the iPhone 11 and older it replaces the entire phone. Replacing just the glass is usually far more affordable. On the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, only the panel below the camera plateau is glass. We'll confirm the method for your exact model when we quote.

How we replace iPhone back glass
Removable back panels
iPhone 14, 14 Plus and the iPhone 15 onwardsThese models were designed to open from the back, so the repair is quick and low-risk.
- The cracked panel is released and lifted away in one piece
- Any glass fragments are cleared from the frame
- A new panel is fitted with fresh adhesive
- Wireless charging and MagSafe are tested
Bonded back glass
iPhone 8 to iPhone 13, and iPhone 14 Pro and Pro MaxHere the glass is fixed to the frame itself, so it has to come off without disturbing the parts inside.
- The battery and internal parts are protected before work starts
- The broken glass is carefully separated from the frame
- The frame is cleaned back so the new glass sits perfectly flat
- New glass is bonded in place and wireless charging is tested
Is it just the glass, or is the frame bent too?
A drop hard enough to crack the back can sometimes bend the frame underneath. It's worth knowing before you book, because new glass won't sit properly on a bent frame. If we spot frame damage, we'll show you and explain your options before any work starts.
Signs the frame may be bent
- The phone rocks when you lay it flat on a table
- The screen is lifting away at one edge
- Buttons feel stiff or don't click properly
- The cracks start from a dented corner

Cracked back glass? What to do until it's fixed
- Cover the cracks
- A strip of clear tape or a clear case holds splinters in place and protects your fingers.
- Keep it away from steam and rain
- Cracks let moisture in, so avoid using your iPhone in a steamy bathroom and keep it dry outdoors.
- Keep the camera area clean
- Glass fragments near the camera can scratch the lens covers, so brush the area gently clear.
- Charge it by cable for now
- Loose glass can scratch a charging pad and stop the phone sitting flat on it.
Other damage worth fixing at the same time

A drop that cracks the back often chips a camera lens cover too. See our iPhone camera repair service.

iPhone back glass replacement FAQs
How much does iPhone back glass replacement cost in Manchester?
Back glass replacement starts from £44. Models with a removable back panel cost less to repair than older iPhones where the glass is bonded to the frame. Send us your model for a fixed price, confirmed before any work starts.
How long does it take to replace iPhone back glass?
Removable panels on the iPhone 14, 14 Plus and the iPhone 15 onwards are usually replaced the same day. Bonded glass on older models takes longer, because the adhesive needs time to set, and we'll give you a timescale when we quote.
Will wireless charging and MagSafe still work?
Yes. The wireless charging coil sits just behind the glass, so we test wireless charging, and MagSafe where your model has it, before your iPhone comes back to you.
Will the new back glass match my iPhone's colour?
Yes. We fit back glass matched to your iPhone's model and colour, so it looks the way it did before it cracked.
Is it safe to keep using an iPhone with cracked back glass?
It will usually keep working, but loose glass can cut you and the cracks let dust and moisture in. Clear tape or a case is a sensible short-term fix until it's repaired.
My camera lens is cracked as well. Can you fix both?
Yes. The camera lens covers are separate parts on most models, so we can replace them in the same repair as the back glass. Just mention it when you ask for a quote.
Will my iPhone still be water resistant after a back glass repair?
We use fresh adhesive whenever we replace back glass, but once an iPhone has been opened, no repairer can promise its factory water resistance. Treat it as no longer waterproof and keep it dry.
Can a cracked back affect my camera?
It can. The camera lens covers sit in the back of the phone, so nearby cracks can let dust reach the lenses or spread into a lens cover. If your photos look hazy since the damage, mention it when you ask for a quote.
Is back glass replacement possible on the new iPhone 18 Pro?
Yes. On the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, the rear glass lifts away as its own panel, and Apple built the wireless charging coil into it. That makes it one of the more straightforward back glass repairs, and MagSafe charging is checked before your phone comes back.
Why won't Apple just replace my back glass?
On the iPhone 12 and 13, Apple replaces the whole rear enclosure, and on the iPhone 11 and older it replaces the entire phone, which costs considerably more. We replace just the glass.
