Is your Kindle screen cracked?

Cracks in an e-ink screen can be almost invisible. The give-away is usually what the screen does: part of a page stays frozen, lines run across it, a patch goes grey or black, or a ghost of an old page remains even after a restart.

Those signs almost always mean the display is damaged, often from pressure in a bag rather than a drop. Restarting won't cure a cracked screen, but a replacement brings the Kindle back to normal.

Restart it properlyHold the power button until a power menu appears or the screen goes blank, then keep holding for 40 seconds and release.
Restart while chargingIf it seems dead, plug it in for 30 minutes, then do the same 40-second restart with the charger connected.
Try another cableA worn cable or weak USB plug can stop a Kindle charging, especially older micro-USB models.
Look for a frozen patchIf part of the screen never changes, even after restarting, it's likely a damaged screen rather than software.

How much does a Kindle screen repair cost?

It depends on the model. A Paperwhite or Colorsoft screen costs more than a basic Kindle screen, and a Scribe screen more again. We'll confirm a fixed price, and whether a repair makes sense, before starting.

How do I know if my Kindle screen is cracked?

E-ink cracks aren't always visible. A frozen patch, lines, or part of an old page that stays on screen after a restart usually mean the screen is damaged.

My Kindle is stuck on the start-up screen. Can you fix it?

Often, yes. Try a 40-second restart while it's charging first. If it still won't start, the cause may be the battery, the software or the board, and we'll find out which.

Will I lose my Kindle books?

No. Books bought from Amazon are stored in your account and download again once you sign in. Only files you copied on yourself need a separate backup.

Is my Kindle waterproof?

The current Paperwhite and Colorsoft are, but the basic Kindle and the Kindle Scribe aren't. Even waterproof Kindles can be damaged by liquid getting in through a crack.

Yes. They come with a 2-year guarantee from Amazon, so if yours is still covered, contact Amazon first.
